It was an exciting day from morning to night in Hong Kong, as LME Week Asia officially kicked off with a wide range of speeches, panel discussions, networking opportunities and more, and will be topped off tonight by the traditional black-tie gala dinner at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The morning was busy, as more than 600 people filed into the convention center to hear the welcoming speech from Hong Kong Financial Secretary John Tsang. HKEx Chief Executive Charles Li followed by stressing Hong Kong’s potential as a commodities hub in Asia, focusing on China’s needs to internationalise and gain more pricing power (you can watch his full speech below). He also said commodities has the potential to become a key asset class in the Mutual Market with Mainland China. LME Chief Executive Garry Jones followed up by announcing the extension of LMEsword to offer a warrant-repository for non-LME metal.

The session then broke up into panel discussions on topics like how we can weather the current commodity market, China’s growing influence in metals, and the outlook going forward. The Chief Executive’s panel, in particular, focused on the fresh thinking needed as China internationalises its commodity market.

Last but not the least, more than 1,600 guests attended the LME Week Asia Gala Dinner.  All the guests had a fun evening and enjoyed the great food and special entertainment.
