Information Vendor’s Data Services Interruption

Market Operations
26 May 2011

In response to media enquiries on an information vendor’s data services, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) issued the following statement:

HKEx received reports of problems this morning from one of its information vendors, Thomson Reuters.  HKEx has been in contact with Thomson Reuters, which confirmed that its real-time data from the Hong Kong market was not updating between8:30 am and 10:17 am this morning due to an issue at the company that affected its customers globally.  Thomson Reuters has resumed normal services.

HKEx has contacted the majority of Indirect Connection Real-time Information Vendors (IVs) and Exchange Participants (EPs) which normally get market data from Thomson Reuters.  HKEx received reports from individual liquidity providers (LPs) for structured products that their liquidity provision might have been affected by the Thomson Reuters service problem.  After the interruption, the affected LPs fell back to manual operations to respond to quote requests, but they have resumed normal operations and liquidity provision service.  Separately, the EPs using Thomson Reuters’ data feed confirmed that the data services interruption had no major impact on their trading operations as they have alternative data sources.

The data feeds for both HKEx’s securities and derivatives markets and all other major market systems of HKEx continue to operate normally.  In addition, HKEx has not received any reports of problems from other information vendors.

HKEx has informed the Securities and Futures Commission of the incident and kept them updated of the development.
