HKEX Markets Break Shenzhen Connect, Structured Product and Derivatives Records

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited’s (HKEX) markets set several records this week amidst strong market momentum.  The following data are provided in response to media enquiries.

Securities market

  • Record high Northbound Shenzhen Connect turnover of RMB9.1 billion on Thursday (23 November).  
  • Record high 355 Structured Product (derivative warrants and Callable Bull/Bear Contracts, or CBBCs) launches on Tuesday (21 November), surpassing the previous record of 325 on 8 July 2015.
  • Record high 18,669 Structured Product launches in a single year (as of 23 November 2017), surpassing the record of 17,626 in 2014.

Derivatives market

  • Record high total futures and options turnover of 1,751,097 contracts on Thursday (23 November), surpassing the previous record of 1,725,327 contracts set on 13 April 2015.
  • Record high Stock Options open interest of 11,954,359 contracts on Thursday (23 November).
  • Record high Hang Seng China Enterprises Index Options open interest of 3,387,599 contracts on Thursday (23 November).

Other notable figures

  • Southbound Stock Connect (Shanghai and Shenzhen) turnover was $21.6 billion on Tuesday (21 November), the highest since 9 April 2015, when it was $26.1 billion.
  • Securities market turnover was $158.2 billion on Wednesday (22 November), the highest since 10 July 2015, when it was $182.1 billion.
  • $26.8 billion was raised through initial public offerings, or IPOs, in the first 24 days of this month (November 2017), the highest total since October 2016, when the full-month figure was $31.4 billion.
  • Four of the 10 biggest  IPOs year to date have been in this month (November 2017) (please see table below for details).
