HKEx Participates in Give & Gain Day 2012

Corporate
21 May 2012

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) participated in the Give & Gain Day campaign on Friday, 18 May 2012, joining an international movement aimed at mobilising employees to serve the community by volunteering during their work hours.  The campaign in Hong Kong was organised by Community Business Limited and comprised companies committed to organising and supporting their employees to serve the community on a voluntary basis.

HKEx’s Give & Gain Day Activities

This year, HKEx partnered with People’s Food Bank of St. James’ Settlement and Foodlink Foundation Limited to “Fight Hunger, Fight Poverty” during the Give & Gain Day campaign.  The People’s Food Bank provides temporary free food assistance to low-income families and individuals in Hong Kong.  Foodlink collaborates with businesses in Hong Kong and takes surplus prepared food that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it to those in need.

HKEx donated 3.88 tonnes of rice and over 150 healthy food gift packs to the People’s Food Bank.  HKEx volunteers helped pack the rice for distribution to about 1,200 short-term food assistance service users, and presented gift packs to the elderly receiving free hot meal service at the People’s Food Bank Kindness Centre in Shek Kip Mei.

HKEx donated $150,000 to Foodlink last year to support its hotel and restaurant safe-to-eat surplus food collection programme for the poor.  This year, HKEx volunteers supported Foodlink through the Give & Gain Day campaign by collecting over 400 packages of surplus bread from 18 Maxim’s Cakes shops for delivery to about 300 beneficiaries, including low-income families, the elderly and disadvantaged youth.

Nearly 50 HKEx volunteers, including senior executives, contributed about 130 service hours to the above activities.  HKEx’s support for Give & Gain Day demonstrates its commitment to creating shared benefits with the Hong Kong community and promoting community participation under its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy.
