Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited kicked off a series of events to mark the 20th anniversary of H-share listings today (Tuesday) with a ceremony with representatives of the six companies that listed H shares in 1993, Tsingtao Brewery, Shanghai Petrochemical, Beiren Printing Machinery, Guangzhou Shipyard, Maanshan Iron & Steel and Kunming Machine Tool.

"The listing of Mainland companies in Hong Kong resulted from cooperation between the Mainland and Hong Kong led to benefits for both economies," HKEx Chairman Chow Chung Kong said.  "As Mainland enterprises have raised international capital through our Stock Exchange to accelerate their growth and development, they have reformed their operations to meet global standards, and they have increased the size and diversity of our markets, making Hong Kong one of the leading international financial centres."

"The H-share market and H-share companies have come a long way since 1993," Mr Chow added.  "In just 20 years they have joined the global leaders by market capitalisation and attracted shareholders from around the world."

The programme began with opening remarks by HKEx Chief Executive Charles Li followed by brief speeches by former China Securities and Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Chairman Liu Hongru, CSRC Director General for International Affairs Tong Daochi and former HKEx Chairman Charles Lee.

The ceremony also included Acting Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Julia Leung, Permanent Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury (Financial Services) Au King-chi, Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) Chairman, Carlson Tong, SFC Chief Executive Ashley Alder and representatives from intermediaries which had participated in the listing of the H-share companies 20 years ago.

The series will continue later this month with an event in Zhengzhou on listing in Hong Kong.  There will be similar events in Guangzhou, Harbin and Hong Kong in September and October and the series will end with a major symposium in Beijing in the latter part of the fourth quarter.
