Remarks by Chief Executive Mr Kwong Ki-chi at the Ceremony to Mark the Commencement of Trading of MSCI China

Corporate
07 May 2001

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen:

I am pleased to announce the commencement of trading of MSCI China Free Index Futures contracts on our futures exchange today.

The MSCI China Free Index is a leading index representative of the universe of China stocks open to investors outside the Mainland of China. The futures contract based on that index is therefore a useful investment tool for investors interested in that sector of the market.

We are introducing this new product on a firm foundation. MSCI is a leading provider of global indices and benchmark-related products. Our Derivatives Market specialises in financial futures and options. And Hong Kong is the leading international financial centre for China.

We think the China Free Index Futures contracts will meet the needs of a wide range of investors here in Hong Kong and overseas. We also think it is important to take a long-term view when introducing new products. New products often take time to develop so we have not set any short-term volume or open interest targets for this new product.

We will continue to monitor the markets to determine investors' interest in new products, including more regional products.

Thank you.
