Overview

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) launch a joint pilot project to explore a new digital payment solution for the After-Hours Trading (AHT) session in the derivatives market.

This project aims to enhance Hong Kong’s capital market and meet the growing market demand for AHT. It is exploring the use of wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) for payment of advance margin for the AHT session, enhancing the risk management capabilities of the derivatives market outside regular banking business hours, whilst maintaining existing operational workflows.

What's next?

HKEX is inviting Clearing Participants (CPs) under HKFE Clearing Corporation Limited (HKCC) to participate in Real-Value Trial Transactions on an optional basis, tentatively in the second half of 2026, subject to the regulatory approval of required rule amendments. Interested HKCC CPs shall submit registration for participation via this link. Details for the operational arrangements of the Real-Value Trial Transactions will be released to relevant CPs in 3Q2026.

Wider adoption will be subject to regulatory approval, market readiness and other relevant considerations.
