GEM website incident

Corporate
14 Nov 2002

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) will deactivate the temporary backup website address at http://www.backup.hkex.com.hk/news/index.htm from 6pm today (Thursday, 14 November).

The temporary address was activated on Monday, 11 November to provide additional public access to announcements in relation to Growth Enterprise Market (GEM) issuers following certain reported public inaccessibility of the GEM website (http://www.hkgem.com) via the Internet at around 10:10am on Monday.

Normal public access to the GEM website via the Internet was fully restored by the two HKEx appointed Internet Service Providers (ISPs) at 11:50am on Monday.

The preliminary investigation indicated Monday's incident was due to incorrect routing from a faulty router at one of the two local ISPs that normally routed the public Internet traffic to the HKEx GEM website.

The local ISP is conducting further investigations, and HKEx will follow up with the ISP on the root cause of the incident.

All HKEx systems including website systems have been operating normally during the incident.
