HKEx announces senior appointments and revised corporate structure

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) announced today (Friday) the following senior appointments and revisions to its organisation structure. The changes will further enhance HKEx's regulatory and business operations as well as improve the overall efficiency of its two exchanges and the associated clearing houses.

Gerald Greiner will join HKEx on 17 May 2004 as Deputy Chief Operating Officer and Head of Exchange Division. He will report directly to Chief Operating Officer Patrick Conroy. Mr Greiner will also serve as Acting Head of Risk Management until a department head is appointed. The Head of Risk Management will report to Mr Conroy.

The Exchange Division will focus on managing trading and market operations, developing new products, conducting market surveillance, recruiting new Exchange Participants (EPs) and servicing and training existing EPs. The division will comprise three departments: Cash Market Development & Operations, Derivatives Market Development & Operations and Participant Admission & Surveillance.

The Business Development and Investor Services Division (BDISD), which will be under the management of Lawrence Fok, will focus on managing investor relations, recruiting new listed issuers and promoting HKEx and its markets to the general public through educational seminars. BDISD will comprise three departments: Business Development, Investor Services and Beijing Representative Office. Mr Fok will report to Chief Executive Paul Chow.

Alfred Wong has been appointed Head of Information Technology Division (ITD) and Chief Technology Officer. Mr Wong reports to Mr Conroy.

"These changes resulted from a review that looked into how we could further enhance our organisation structure, improve operational efficiency and strengthen HKEx's regulatory, risk management and market operations" said HKEx Chief Executive Paul Chow.

The revised organisation structure is attached along with brief biographies of Mr Greiner and Mr Wong.

Gerald Greiner

Gerald Greiner is currently Senior Director in the Securities and Futures Commission's (SFC) Supervision of Markets Division. Before joining the SFC in 1989, he held several senior executive positions in the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). His SEC experience covered internal operations and the regulation of US stock, options and government securities markets. Mr Greiner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Allegheny College in the US and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Toledo College of Law in the US.

Alfred Wong

Alfred Wong was Deputy Head of IT before taking up his current position. He has also held several other senior IT positions in HKEx and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (SEHK) since November 1992. In addition, he was with the Stock Exchange between 1985 and 1987, when he had a key role in the implementation of the computer-assisted trading system in the Trading Hall for the four exchanges that formed the SEHK. Mr Wong has also worked as a project leader at the Australian Stock Exchange and a consultant application engineer at Australia's Westpac Banking Corp. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Chemistry from the University of Hong Kong, a Graduate Management Qualification from the University of New South Wales in Australia and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Executive MBA programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
