Hang Seng China H-Financials Index Futures’ First-day Trading Volume

Statistics
16 Apr 2007

Trading volume of Hang Seng China H-Financials Index (HFI) futures, which were introduced today, was 183 contracts (181 April contracts and two May contracts).

The underlying index for the new futures contract is compiled and calculated by HSI Services Limited to track the performance of major Mainland financial stocks in the H-shares universe.  The constituents currently comprise five banks and three insurance companies.

The new contract was introduced following requests from market participants for a futures contract on the HFI.

“Today’s rollout of HFI futures went well,” said Calvin Tai, Head of HKEx’s Derivatives Market Department.  “We always take a long-term view on new products since they often take time to develop so we do not have any specific volume or open interest targets for HFI futures.”

“We appreciate the support of the Exchange Participants who have been introducing HFI futures to their clients and the efforts of everyone who worked to make sure today's rollout was smooth,” Mr Tai added.
