08 Apr 2014

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) and the London Metal Exchange (LME), a member of HKEx Group, will host LME Week Asia 2014 in Hong Kong during the week of 21 April.  This year's theme is global connectivity.

The week's series of events will bring together leading metals market participants from around the world opportunities to discuss the latest industry developments, trends and opportunities, particularly in Mainland China and the rest of Asia.

The LME Week Asia Metals Seminar, one of the highlights of the programme, will be held on Thursday, 24 April 2014 at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre.  Topics will include:

  • What are the challenges and opportunities for Asia as it connects with the rest of the world?
  • Asia time zone strategy – how do east and west fit together?
  • How will the next phase of the internationalisation of the Mainland commodities markets evolve?

HKEx Chief Executive Charles Li will be the moderator of the internationalisation discussion and the panel lists will be senior representatives of the Shanghai Futures Exchange, Dalian Commodity Exchange, Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange and China Futures Association.

Hong Kong's Financial Secretary, John Tsang, will provide opening remarks at the seminar.  Mr Li will give a welcome address and there will also be a keynote speech by HKEx Co-head of Global Markets and LME Chief Executive Garry Jones.

More than 500 senior executives representing over 250 companies participated in last year's seminar and another large turnout is expected this year.  HKEx is also expecting a large turnout for this year’s LME Week Asia dinner to be held in the evening of the 24th.  Last year, about 900 people attended the event.  Most LME Week Asia participants are from Asia and Europe, and many are based in Mainland China or the UK.

"We are excited about our second LME Week Asia in Hong Kong and pleased to see others organising activities in connection with the event," said Mr Li.  "LME Week Asia is already a major event on the metals community's calendar and we look forward to it becoming even bigger as we build our Asia Commodities business."

"LME Week Asia is one of the many ways we are strengthening our relationships with stakeholders in the East and reaching beyond metals" said Mr Jones.  "Asia's role in commodity markets has grown significantly and we expect it to expand further."

Further details of LME Week Asia 2014 are available on the HKEx Group website.

Note: LME Week Asia is the Asian edition of LME Week, an important fixture in the global metals industry calendar that is held in London every October. During the week, thousands of practitioners of the mining and metals industry get together for the LME’s annual metals seminar and dinner, which is by invitation only. In addition, the LME membership and other metals industry organisations often organise their own events throughout the week.
