HKEX Presents Stock Connect Awards to Honour Market Participants

Mutual Market
08 Mar 2018
  • Awards recognise market participants’ contributions to Stock Connect in 2017
  • Shenzhen Connect included for first time

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) today (Thursday) presented its Stock Connect Awards for 2017 to recognise major brokerages for their achievements last year in the city’s landmark stock trading linkages with the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges.

HKEX welcomed guests from the industry to an awards presentation ceremony at the newly-unveiled HKEX Connect Hall, celebrating the success of the Stock Connect programme that enables investors in the Mainland China and Hong Kong stock markets to trade hundreds of securities in the other markets through an exchange in their home market.

The Stock Connect Awards for 2017 were the first to honour the contributions of market participants to both Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect (the schemes were introduced in late 2014 and late 2016 respectively).

Four sets of awards were presented to brokerages with the highest Northbound trading volumes in Stock Connect in 2017, while awards were also presented to custodians and Clearing Participants in the programme.  In addition, awards were handed out for the brokers with the best improvement in ranking during the year.

“Stock Connect had record high Northbound and Southbound turnover last year and has helped us meet Mainland investors’ demand for diversification while becoming the leading channel for offshore interest in A shares.  All these would not have been possible without the efforts and support of our market participants,” said HKEX Chief Executive Charles Li.

In 2017, as the Shanghai and Shenzhen Connect links celebrated their third and first anniversaries respectively, trading volumes in both directions surged, with total Northbound turnover nearly trebling to RMB2,266 billion, while Southbound turnover rose 170 per cent to $2,259 billion.
