HKEx publishes Market Statistics 2005 in response to media requests

In response to media requests, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) published today (Friday) the market statistics for 2005 on its website (http://www.hkex.com.hk) under the Press Room/ News Release section.

Highlights of the market statistics (up to21 December 2005) include:

1. The market capitalisation hit an all-time high on21 December 2005at $8,260.3 billion.
2. The Stock Exchange set an annual turnover record of $4,444.4 billion.
3. The derivative warrant market set a new record with a total of 1,647 newly listed derivative warrants and posted a record turnover of $842.5 billion.
4. As of21 December 2005, the total equity capital raised reached $294.8 billion, comprising equity capital raised by Initial Public Offers (IPO) of $165.3 billion and post-IPO equity capital raised of $129.5 billion. The equity capital raised by IPO for 2005 has not only set a new record, but also exceeded the post-IPO capital raised for the first time.
5. Combining the equity capital raised and $25.5 billion* raised in the three new listings of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), funds raised up to21 December 2005totalled $320.3 billion*.
6. As of21 December 2005, the total number of newly listed company excluding REITs was 67 (Main Board: 57; Growth Enterprise Market: 10).
7. Total futures and options turnover rose 26.4 per cent from 2004 to 24,821,298 contracts, a record high.
8. Both Hang Seng Index Futures (HSIF) and stock options trading volume set new records in 2005. Up to 21 December, HSIF trading volume rose 11.7 per cent from 2004 to 9,605,809 contracts and stock options volume rose 51.6 per cent to 8,508,809 contracts.
